2005 Reports
Killarney Forestry Rally 4th September 2005. Limerick driver Matt Shinnors and his West Cork co-driver Denis O'Donovan enjoyed one of their best results finishing 1st in Class and 12th place overall on last Sunday's Killarney Forestry Rally. This makes 3 wins from 3 starts on rounds of the year Irish Forestry Championship for Shinnors. Although suffering the effect of the Flu, Shinnors set off in determined fashion taking 20 seconds out of his nearest class rival James Flynn on the opening stage. This was followed up with another 20 seconds on the 2nd stage, as Matt and Denis found the long fast stages suited them. However by the end of the 2nd stage Matt found the brake balance on his Toyota Engined Escort Mk 11 was not to his liking - "I had changed and bedded in a new set of back brake pads the day before the rally, however I was having to adjust the brake balance on the stages as the brakes heated."
Sure enough on the third stage car locked up braking for 5R and slipped of the road. "We must have been doing not more than 15 mph when we slipped off the road, luckily there were a group of Spectators at the turn and they were able to get car back on the road. There was not a mark on the car but we dropped a lot of time."
At service Denis checked out the times with the other crews, and despite the problems the Escort crew still had a 12 second lead.
The 3 morning stages were repeated after service where the crew set about regaining their confidence and preserving their lead. While the msmotorsport car dropped a second the chasing pack on SS4, 2 quick times on the final 2 stages saw the crew take their 2nd class win in a row by 23 seconds.
Having now satisfied the criteria for the Billy Coleman award, Matt hopes to compete on a tarmac event or 2 before the end of the year. Report Cork Forestry Rally, 23/24th July '05 Matt Shinnors took a well deserved class win in the Cork Forestry Rally last Sunday. Driving his Ford Escort Mk2 Matt was partnered by Denis O Donovan on the two day event which was based in Mallow Co.Cork. Weather was brutal as the crews set off on Saturday afternoon for the opening day's stages. The plan for the team was to settle in to a comfortable pace as the stages were very slippery in the tricky conditions. At the end of the day with only 1/3 of the rally mileage complete, the msmotorsport crew found themselves 20th overall and 2nd in class 3 to championship regular James Flynn in a Honda Civic, by 19 seconds. The only trouble in Matt's self prepared Escort was a lose fan belt on the road section into service.
Weather conditions on Day 2 dawned worse, but with faster and harder packed stages it was time to attack. On the opening 20Km stage Matt and Denis took 17 seconds off the flying Honda. And knew they would be able to get ahead of the Civic crew in the remaining stages. By the end of the day had build up a 35 second winning margin. To add to this the crew soon discovered that had finished 3rd 2wd, behind Brian Lawlor and Frank Kelly and 14th overall.
At the rally prizegiving Matt said he “was thrilled with the result. It was a real tonic to win the class coming from behind. The conditions were treacherous yesterday after all the rain. I drove at my own pace and was happy to be just 19 seconds off James (Flynn) overnight. This morning I turned up the wick on the long stage and was fastest by 17 seconds. James struck back with two stage wins but I won the other five to finish with a margin of 35 seconds. Denis did a great job on the notes and the car ran well all day. Report Junior Rally of Lakes, 1st May '05 Matt Shinnors made his first return to Tarmac since last year's Junior Rally of the Lakes, aiming to bring his forestry style to the classic Kerry Stages. After finishing 4th on last years event Matt and new co-driver Sean Duggan set out with the aim of enjoying themselves and hoping for a good overall finish among the 40 entries. On the opening 2 stages, Molls Gap and Ballaghbeama Matt found it hard to judge the level of grip from the tarmac competition tyres in the damp conditions, but arrived into service 8th overall after a trouble free run in his self-prepared car. Caragh Lake was the next stage to be tackled. Any chance of a top 10 finish were dashed only a mile into the stage the red Mk II clipped a rock pulled out by another competitor. Being so early in the stage, Matt and Sean had no choice but to stop and change the wheel. After that it was a case of having a cut and enjoying the remaining stages. The Junior Rally was won by Raymond Conlon from Monaghan in a Toyota Corolla from Wexford’s James Stafford in a Ford Puma Super 1600.

Tolputt Keeton Winter Stages Rally Wales 26th Feburary 2005 Team msmotorsport season kicked off with a BANG on Tolputt Keeton Winter Stages Rally. The Rally set in Mid Wales took place over classic Rally GB stages in Sweet Lamb and Hafren forestry complexes. The team were greeted with the challenge of snow and ice covered stages in addition to map reading instead of regular pacenotes used in Irish forestry championship.
Matt and George set an impressive time on stage one, just 8 seconds slower than eventual rally winner Jon Ingram in his Focus WRC.
Stage two started on tar and changed back to gravel and snow, during this test the Escort ground to a halt with transmission failure. The cause of failure was attributed to bolts shearing on the flywheel resulting in immediate retirement. It was a disappointing start to new season but a respectable time over the first stage showed promise for the season to come. The team hopes next to return to the Irish Forestry scene in Mitchelstown on Easter Sunday.
2004 Reports Junior Rally of Lakes - 2nd May 2004 Matt Shinnors made a successful transition from loose surface to tarmac with a fine fourth overall finish on the Junior Rally of the Lakes 2004. Co-driven by local navigator Brian Duggan, the "Tully Electrical" backed Mk 2 Escort posted some competitive times amongst a the field of very talented young drivers. Having completed the Skibbereen Single Stage the weekend previous as OO car it was on to Killarney and the promise of a run over some classic tarmac stages including the legendary Molls Gap, Beallaghbeama and the ultra quick Caragh Lake. The Limerick-Kerry pairing proved competitive from the outset trading time with some of the more established tarmac regulars. The event was won by James Stafford/Niall Whitty in their rapid Vauxhall Nova, from up and coming talent Owen Murphy/Niall O'Sullivan competing in a Peugeot 206. Roscrea driver Eoghan Fogarty partnered by Timmy England rounded off the top 3. Matt really enjoyed the tarmac stages commenting "Its great to get the opportunity to compete over classic tarmac stage such as Molls Gap, in a rally format like this, which is very affordable for junior competitors". Matt takes a sabbatical from the tarmac scene to compete in the two day Cork Forestry rally next July where he hopes to battle with top 1600 class competitors once again. Thanks again to those who supported the msmotorsport.com crew:- John Tully Electrical Cavan VIP Escort Parts www.vetcar.ie Sean Conlon Memorial, Michelstown Forestry Rally - 28th March 2004 Disaster Strikes Disaster Strikes Having resolved gearbox maladies which dogged the progress of the msmotorsport.com Escort of Matt Shinnors on the opening round of the McCauley Trailers National Forestry Championship it was full steam ahead for round two in Mitchlestown. The event which consisted of three stages done twice in the foothills of the Galtee Mountains received a top class entry from Ireland and beyond. With a new navigator in Dominic O' Connor on board the stage was set for an epic battle with the top class 3 contingent. Trouble however it seemed was never too far away! Having left the start of stage one the Ford crew began to experience difficulties with their steering one and half miles into the 5.8 mile stage. Unable to rectify the problem on the stage the crew limped their way to the end where the succumbed to the inevitable having discovered their steering problems were terminal. A tough decision to retire on safety ground had to be taken. The class three and fastest two wheel drive awards on the day went to the courageous Starlet crew of Paul Mulcahy and Karl Baumann who finished a creditable 13th overall. James Flynn finished second in the class in his newly acquired Honda civic which broke the monopoly of the rear wheel drives. The remaining podium place was rounded off by John Fleming in a PH Rally Hire mk2 escort. The National Forestry circus next moves to the tight and twisty lanes of Wicklow for round three and the msmotorsport.com team hope it will be third time lucky Willie Loughman Memorial, Carrick Forest Rally - 22nd February 2004 Having succumbed to mechanical difficulties at a very early stage on last year's event the crew of Matt Shinnors and Adrian Deasy in their MSMotorsport Escort were determined to stamp their authority on this year's event. Cool, dry weather greeted the crews as they left the start ramp early on Sunday morning with the promise of a great days rallying ahead. And what could be better than a highflying tour of the infamous Anner stage, with its huge jumps and flat crests, to wake-up the crews after their four month sabbatical from the forests. With pre-event nerves put behind them the escort crew stormed to a very impressive 12th fastest stage time on the opener, placing themselves in amongst the more powerful Group N machinery. Stage two was a short 2.6-mile test, which proved difficult for many crews with a lot of drivers struggling to master its twisty nature. Next the crew tackled the 5.4 mile Slievenamon stage and posted a time of 7 minutes dead, despite picking up a puncture towards the latter end of the stage not to mention a worrisome noise emitting from the transmission. On the road section to service in Clonmel, the transmission noises worsened and gear selection became difficult, with the car sometimes sticking in one gear. Having played with the gearbox in service, the crew decided to continue on regardless of the problem and aim to finish the event. The following stages were a repeat of the three morning tests and Shinnors/Deasy managed not to loose too much time with their ailing gearbox. In fact they posted 10th fastest time overall on stage 4, a repeat of the Anner test, the flat out sections suiting their inability to select gear quickly. The tighter stage 5 and 6 were to follow and saw them drop 7 seconds over the previous loop which included a puncture. With all there troubles the msmotorsport car a was lying a respectable 10 o/a and second in class to Paul Mulcahy.
Following a changed clutch slave cylinder at service, in an attempt to alleviate their transmission woes, it was off to tackle a loop of two stages south of Clonmel. Disaster struck on the start line of stage 7 as the replaced cylinder gave way and the car ground to a halt, unable to select a gear. All was not lost however as the crew managed to change the broken part and continued on, admittedly losing some 15 minutes in the process and putting to rest any hopes of a class win. The Escort made it back to the Carrick-On-Suir finish 32nd overall and 4th in class with some valuable championship points. |
